Description

Basilicata Coast to Coast – An Itinerant Journey in the Land of Two Seas

From Maratea, the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian,” to Policoro, a lively Lucanian town symbolic of the land reform of the 1950s, built near an ancient city of Magna Graecia. We will follow the locations of the famous film by Rocco Papaleo, in which a band decides to walk across Basilicata from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian Sea to participate in a music festival. A perfect excuse to explore a region still untouched by mass tourism.

Departure is scheduled from the historic center of Maratea, along the only Lucanian stretch overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Following an ancient path once used by the Basilian monks, we will reach the Christ the Redeemer statue, then continue toward the ancient village of Trecchina. The trip includes transfers by minivan and daily excursions, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the unspoiled nature of southern Basilicata.

We will witness the geomorphological transformation of the territory, from the province of Potenza with its mountains reaching over 2,000 meters, lakes, and free-ranging pastures, to Matera with its clay hills, the scenic spectacle of the gullies, and finally the so-called “gardens” along the banks of the Agri River. Traditional Lucanian cuisine will accompany us throughout the journey, featuring the best of rural culinary traditions—from gnummariedd to strascinati with bread crumbs and crispy peppers—in a symphony of ancient flavors that will leave a vivid memory of Lucania.
