Description

The magic of Maurits Cornelis Escher’s art has fascinated the entire world with its optical illusions and impossible geometries. But few know that Escher left a part of his heart in Abruzzo. With its breathtaking landscapes and historical charm, this region inspired the great Dutch artist throughout his life and left an indelible imprint on his vast body of work.

Escher visited Abruzzo for the first time in 1929 and instantly fell in love with the region. Escher’s art was strongly influenced by symmetry, geometric structures and visual perception and Abruzzo offered him a rich ground for exploration and experimentation. With its cliffs, gorges and steep valleys and its sharp contrasts between light and shadow, unthinkable in the Dutch atmosphere, the landscape of Abruzzo appeared profoundly unpredictable to this artist coming from the horizontal geography of the Netherlands.

A journey combining culture, nature and art through magnificent mountain landscapes, picturesque medieval villages such as Scanno, Castrovalva, Pettorano Sul Gizio, Opi and Anversa degli Abruzzi and the wild beauty of the nature which, almost 100 years after Escher’s first visit, has now returned to occupy the abandoned countryside, offering natural refuges for local wildlife and plants.
